Call for Submissions: EUPopLink Special Issue on Populism and Euroscepticism

By eupoplink, 1 May, 2026

Following the productive workshop at the ECPR Joint Sessions (JS), where a clear foundation for a Special Issue was established, the EUPopLink COST Action invites further contributions. We specifically offer the opportunity to EUPopLink members who were unable to attend the ECPR JS but who already have a draft manuscript or an extended abstract aligned with this theme.

This initiative seeks to bring together innovative research on the interplay between populism and Euroscepticism, examining their drivers and broader implications for EU legitimacy. By encouraging methodologically sound and policy-relevant research, this Special Issue aims to address the limited scholarly agreement on how these two phenomena interact in practice.

We welcome contributions on topics including, but not limited to:

  • linkages, overlaps, divergences, and interactions between populism and Euroscepticism
  • socio-political, cultural, and institutional drivers
  • comparative and longitudinal analyses
  • methodological and empirical innovations
  • implications for democracy, governance, and European integration

Publication

The selected papers will be submitted for a special issue in a leading peer-reviewed journal such as JCMS: Journal of Common Market Studies, or Political Research Exchange (PRX).

Submission Format

Authors are invited to submit an extended abstract up to 1,000 words or a draft of their papers, outlining the research question, theoretical framework, methodology, findings (or expected findings), and relevance to the Special Issue theme.

Timeline

Deadline for extended abstracts: 22 May 2026

Selection of contributions: 1 June 2026

Selected contributions will be included in the Special Issue proposal. If the proposal is accepted, invited authors will be asked to submit full manuscripts, which will then undergo the journal’s standard peer review process.

Evaluation Process

Submissions will be assessed by the editors on the basis of relevance, originality, conceptual clarity, methodological rigour, maturity of the draft and overall fit with the proposed Special Issue. Additional criteria include gender, geographical and career stage balance across the Special issue.

Submission

Please send your proposals to:
